French swimming icon Leon Marchand, who has been nursing an injured right adductor since pulling out of the national championships in June, has been named in four events at the European Aquatics Championships Paris 2026 swimming programme, which will run from August 10 to 16 in the Olympic Aquatic Centre.
The 24-year-old quadruple Olympic champion is on the official entry list – linked below – for the men’s 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly and the 200m and 400m individual medley.
There had been doubts concerning his ability to compete in breaststroke, the event in which he was swimming in St Etienne when his problem with the adductor emerged. But it seems Marchand feels confident enough to compete in his signature event, the 400m IM.
His confirmation in the relatively fresh event of the 400m freestyle is also intriguing.
Marchand’s team-mate and fellow world champion Maxime Grousset, who broke a bone in his left foot early in June, is also named to take part in four events – the men’s 50m Freestyle,100m freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly.
Meanwhile Sweden’s 32-year-old three-times Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom, who returned to the sport in April this year at the age of 32 after giving birth to son Adrian in August 2025, is named in the women’s 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly.
