Ranjuo Tomblin produced a landmark performance at the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup Super Final in Toronto as he earned four gold medals.
Britain’s 20-year-old European champion won the men’s individual free and technical titles and also topped the podium along with Paris 2024 silver medallist Izzy Thorpe in the mixed duet free and technical events.
There was further European gold in the women’s solo free, where Germany’s Klara Bleyer, second to China’s 20-year-old world champion Xu Huiyan in the solo technical, finished ahead of home athlete Audrey Lamothe.
Tomblin’s Super Final experience began with a double victory as he earned 249.2033 points in the solo technical to finish ahead of his 18-year-old Chinese rival Guo Muye, who totalled 245.6576.
“Muye is a very strong contender, so I’ve had to up my degree of difficulty to kind of play around with what works and what doesn’t,” Tomblin told World Aquatics.
He followed up immediately by winning the mixed duet technical title with Thorpe as they accrued 224.3934, with Italy’s 19-year-old Filippo Pelati and Lucrezia Ruggiero earning bronze with 216.6392.
Next up for Tomblin was the men’s solo free, which he won with a total of 255.9600, with Pelati taking another bronze on 246.2639.
“My family stayed up late last night to watch my performance and they were really pleased for me, but today I think they’ll be shocked because the solo free is not my strongest event,” Tomblin told World Aquatics.
“I’ve kept my degree of difficulty lower this time (compared to previous events), just to really focus on my height and execution and obviously I’m very pleased with how it turned out.”
He rounded off his competition by partnering Thorpe to gold in the mixed duet free – the event in which they took world bronze last year – thanks to a score of 264.3033.
Bleyer scored 254.6417 to take solo technical silver behind Xu, who totalled 264.4450.
She then won the solo free title with a score of 281.6175, with Lamothe scoring 267.8691 and bronze going to Georgia’s 19-year-old Mari Alavidze on 267.8438.
There was another highlight for Britain as Thorpe returned to her partnership with Kate Shortman – with whom she won duet gold at the Paris 2024 Games – and took second place in the women’s duet technical on 296.9701.
Gold went to China’s Wanjun Lin – who won world gold in this event last year – and Xu on 314.0565.
Italy’s 17-year-old Enrica Picolli, who finished fourth, came away from Toronto with a medal on the final day as she and Ruggiero finished third in the women’s duet free.
Italy had two further successes as they took silver in the team free and bronze in the team technical.
