European athletes enjoyed an outstanding weekend at the opening leg of the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup in Fort Lauderdale, with Romania’s Catalin-Petru Preda and Germany’s Iris Schmidbauer securing victories in the men’s and women’s competitions respectively, while Ukraine also celebrated gold at the World Junior High Diving Championships through Dmytro Vyshyvanov.
The men’s 27m competition saw Preda return to the top of the podium with an assured performance across all four rounds. The Romanian finished with 435.60 points, comfortably clear of Italy’s Davide Baraldi, who claimed silver on 380.25.
Preda closed out the competition with a superb final round 6274B dive worth 152.50 points, the highest scoring dive of the competition, which solidified his win after he took it from Great Britain’s Aidan Heslop at the halfway stage. Behind him, Baraldi produced an impressive and consistent display of his own, including a strong 5266B final dive of his own that earned 117.30 points and saw him jump from sixth to second and secure the silver medal.
European athletes featured prominently throughout the final standings. Romania’s Constantin Popovici suffered a drop on his final dive to finish fourth overall on 363.70 points, while Heslop ultimately finished fifth.
In the women’s 20m event, Schmidbauer delivered a composed and consistent performance to secure victory with 329.45 points. The German surged to the front of the pack with solid 6254D dive, which carried a incredible 4.2 degree of difficulty, to leapfrog the pack and take the gold ahead of Canada’s Molly Carlson, who is one of the strongest high divers on the circuit.
Ukraine’s Nelli Chukanivska narrowly missed out on a podium place in fourth with 309.50 points after being inside the podium places for the majority of the competition, while Dutch diver Ginni van Katwijk placed fifth. Switzerland’s Morgane Herculano and Italy’s Elisa Cosetti also secured top-eight finishes in seventh and eighth respectively.
There was further European success in the junior competition as 15-year-old Vyshyvanov claimed the men’s title at the World Junior High Diving Championships. The Ukrainian totalled 272.20 points, highlighted by a strong 5141B dive worth 79.80 points.
